Before the fecal even came back, he said this looks more like pancreatitis. Anyway, the next day, his regular vet took a fecal sample and did two different tests for Giardia. He was too old for walks at that point and the last vet visit was Feb 1 for a nail trim. It had been raining a lot, but Giardia still didn’t make a whole lot of sense because he didn't go anywhere but the backyard. My stepmom (former vet tech) intervened after a sleepless night and gave him fluids, a probiotic, an anti-nausea/diarrheal, and a parasite med because she suspected Giardia. Then he started vomiting and couldn’t keep water down. Third, he was already on a strict, extremely low fat diet since June because he was diagnosed with high cholesterol at the time of his Cushing's diagnosis. When it wasn't yellow, it was full of mucous. Second, it was mustard yellow with a bit of blood and the smell was distinct. He had episodes of diarrhea in the past that resolved quickly, but this felt different.

He was going out every 15-30 min and I had to be up with him all night by myself because my disabled parent I live with couldn’t help. In late February, he had a really bad episode of diarrhea. He responded really well to the meds and even gained weight back and grew hair back in areas that it was missing for over a year when we had skin growths removed.įast forward to this year. He was drinking a lot more water and started peeing in the house which he did not do before. Last year in June, he was diagnosed with Cushing’s. Not easy to watch, but they only happened once a year tops, usually 2 years in between episodes. Thereafter, his seizures were pretty mild and sort of unusual he mostly would just lose his balance or dart off bumping into things. We didn’t know if he had got into something toxic. When he was around 3 or 4, he was diagnosed with epilepsy after an episode that scared the hell out of us. Some background: my dog was surprisingly “healthy” for all the ailments he had. Now I’m feeling guilty that even though I was with him and holding onto his little body as he passed in his bed, I wasn’t the last thing he saw with his eyes.

At first, I felt guilty for maybe doing it too soon. Others felt guilty for not doing it soon enough.

Some felt guilty for not seeing the signs when their pet passed away on them unexpectedly. Based on talking to those same friends again after he went, they ALL told me that they felt guilty. One thing no one ever tells you is how guilty you will feel after. I always expected this day to come and have talked to a lot of friends about their own experiences well before I was even considering it for my guy.
